Andre Onana opts against representing Cameroon in AFCON opener after ensuring he’s available for United vs Spurs

Andre Onana has reportedly chosen to sit out of Cameroon’s Africa Cup of Nations opener against Guinea on Monday, January 15, as per i News.

The goalkeeper has instead chosen to prioritise Manchester United and repay Erik ten Hag’s continued faith in him by ensuring he’s available to face Tottenham Hotspur this Sunday at Old Trafford, with the game scheduled to take place around 24 hours prior to the group-stage tie. Following the Premier League match, he’ll take a seven-hour flight to the host nation, Ivory Coast.

Onana also held talks with his national team regarding a delayed meet-up as he wanted to fill his role between the sticks in the Reds’ FA Cup tie on Monday evening, which saw them progress to the fourth round with a 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic.

Onana could miss zero United games

Should Cameroon exit the tournament at the group stage, the 27-year-old would return to Manchester having missed zero minutes of club action. This would, in turn, mean that Altay Bayindir is still being made to wait for his United debut. Harsh.
