Why Amad, Antony and Eriksen are absent from United’s matchday squad vs Wigan

Erik ten Hag has named a strong starting 11 to take on League One opponents Wigan Athletic in the third round of the FA Cup tonight.

Manchester United will be keen to ignite a spirited cup run to boost the morale of the squad and supporters after a tumultuous first half of the 2023/2024 campaign. As well as that, there’s no doubt that making amends for last season’s final heartbreak at the hands of Manchester City will still be on the players’ minds heading into this term’s competition.

While the line-up may be a more experienced crop of Reds, the bench is certainly a youthful one, with the likes of Willy Kambwala, Omari Forson and Joe Hugill all named among the substitutes.

Fans were quick to note the absences of Christian Eriksen, Amad Diallo and Antony, and it has since been confirmed that the latter is injured, while the former duo are missing out through illness, as confirmed by journalists Rob Dawson [ESPN] and Samuel Luckhurst [MEN].
