United player still expected to leave this summer despite being in ‘internal discussion’ with board

Anthony Martial is expected to leave Manchester United this summer upon the expiration of his contract, despite Erik ten Hag’s comments to the media on Thursday.

The manager confirmed in his press conference that Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Hannibal Mejbri and Victor Lindelof all had their one-year contract extensions triggered by the club, keeping them tied to Old Trafford until at least 2025.

He then further added that United were ‘talking’ with Raphael Varane and Martial regarding their deals and that there was an ‘internal discussion’ ongoing between the players and the club.

Such comments, of course, led to speculation that the striker may be granted new terms, however, sources at ESPN do not believe this to be the case. While talks are underway between the parties, it’s reportedly ‘unlikely’ that it would result in Martial staying beyond June.

Another quiet season for Martial

Martial, 27, has endured an injury-plagued United career since signing from Monaco in 2015 and last season, in particular, saw him sidelined more often than he was available. He’s been ruled out of action for the past month due to illness and with Ten Hag claiming that he’s not expecting any changes to his squad for Monday’s FA Cup tie against Wigan Athletic, it seems the frontman’s absence will be extended.
