Rio Ferdinand gives verdict on Manchester United’s top four hopes

Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester United can turn their season around by finishing in the top four.

There are more than just the usual Premier League clubs seriously in with a chance of qualifying for the Champions League.

In recent years we’ve became so used to the Champions League spots consisting of Man City, Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham – though Reds will tell you United have missed out on qualification on far too many occasions.

Last year it wasn’t just Newcastle challenging either. Brighton climbed up the table, while Aston Villa found themselves in the mix too. Liverpool finished fifth, Tottenham eight and Chelsea down in 12th.

United are currently seventh in the Premier League with a -4 goal difference, but if we can muster up a few wins over the next two months we’ll be back in contention for Champions League qualification.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand believes it’s a possible feat if United can get better luck on the injury front.

Speaking on TNT Sports prior to Chelsea’s league meeting with Luton Town, Ferdinand gave his verdict on whether United can reach the top four places.

He said (via Manchester Evening News): “I don’t think that [the new minority owners] will have any bearing on it at the moment because they’re not going to have any bearing on the next transfer window. They’re going to be observers, looking and seeing at what’s going on and the big challenges behind the scenes that they can then change. I think the big challenge is injuries. United have are one of the biggest injury ravaged teams this season but come January a lot of those players will be back and I think they’ll have a big impact going forward. Man United are still in touch. And with a bigger squad that’s back playing and hopefully more confident – they’ll be back in the top four.”
