Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has been linked with an exit recently, but Fabrizio Romano believes a departure is more likely for next summer than this January.

That is according to Fabrizio Romano (via YouTube) on his Daily Briefing roundup.

The journalist was reacting to news that Varane could make a shock return to Real Madrid, with the La Liga giants in the January transfer market for defensive reinforcements.

Romano explains that there has been no contact between Real Madrid and Manchester United, or with the player, whilst admitting that Los Blancos do seem to be considering the possibility of strengthening in defence due to injuries.

While United fans wouldn’t shed a tear of Varane packed his bags and left, I think most would like to see him get a run in the team and perform at his best. On his day we don’t have many better defenders than the World Cup winner.

The 30-year-old is no longer at his peak, but he was key to United recently keeping a clean sheet at Anfield. Do we even have money for a replacement midway through the season?
