Former Manchester United manager heavily linked with Super Lig giants

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been out of work since he was sacked by Manchester United following a two-and-a-half year spell in November 2021.

There could be a big change on the cards as the former Manchester United manager is reportedly on the verge of being appointed Besiktas head coach, according to NTV Spor.

The report claims Solskjaer has been in talks with the Super Lig giants ever since they sacked Riza Calimbay, who lasted just over a month in the job before getting the axe.

This means Solskjaer could be Besiktas’ third permanent manager this season. The Turkish club sacked Senol Gunes in October following a year in the hot seat. Then, Burak Yilmaz took over on an interim basis until Calimbay’s reign was short-lived.

Before his 2+ year stint as a manager at Old Trafford, Solskjaer worked at Molde and Cardiff City where he has gained a lot of experience. This would be an example of the Norwegian stepping out of his comfort zone, and for a team that clearly needs a lot of work.

Besiktas are currently fifth in the Super Lig and 17 points behind rivals Fenerbahce and Galatasaray. It will be a big job to take them back to their previous heights.

Poor performances this season have led to former United defender Eric Bailly – and four other players – being axed by club chiefs this month, even though the Ivory Coast international only joined Besiktas during the summer. It won’t come as a surprise to anyone reading this that Bailly was restricted to just eight appearances for Besiktas due to injury problems.

We would like to wish Solskjaer all the best with whatever decision he makes.
