‘Give the manager time’: Premier League boss calls for United to be patient with Erik ten Hag amid lacklustre second term

David Moyes has called for Manchester United to stick with Erik ten Hag amidst a tumultuous start to the season at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag, now navigating the second term of his tenure, has come under fire for his team’s performances this term, with each loss setting or breaking an unwanted record.

The Reds’ defence of the Carabao Cup ended in the fourth-round after a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United on home turf, cutting short an opportunity to lift silverware again in 2024.

In the Champions League, United oversaw one of their worst campaigns to date after claiming just four points from the 18 available in the group stage, sealing a fourth-placed finish and consequently, dropping out of Europe entirely at the earliest opportunity.

Form in the Premier League has fluctuated and, currently, fans are still holding out for a top-four finish despite the stark competition for the European spots this season. Fewer fixtures across other competitions could well bode in Ten Hag’s favour in terms of focusing on domestic games.

Moyes backs Ten Hag to succeed

Having experienced first-hand the feeling of being sacked by the United board, Moyes doesn’t want to see Ten Hag fall victim to a premature exit.

Speaking ahead of the two sides’ league clash on Saturday, the West Ham boss said: “I don’t want to really make too much comment about Manchester United, but I think the most important thing is that they give the manager time to get everything in place that he wants to do and give him every opportunity to be successful.

“It’s a great football club; great players, great traditions… so many good things about it. Obviously, the supporters there will be looking for something a little bit more but hopefully, they give the manager time to show that.”

“No, not at all,” the Scot responded when asked if managing United is ‘the impossible job’. “Sir Alex [Ferguson] did it and I’ve got no doubt that someone will bring Manchester United back to the levels. I hope for Erik’s sake [that] it’s him, and I’m sure it won’t be too long until they’re back competing in all the major competitions and top of the league again.”
