McTominay named captain, Rashford benched: Confirmed Manchester United starting 11 vs Liverpool

Erik ten Hag has named his starting 11 for this afternoon’s showdown at Anfield.

The manager had a significant decision to make in terms of which Manchester United player would captain the side in Bruno Fernandes’ absence, as the midfielder misses out through suspension after receiving his fifth yellow card last week.

Ten Hag has opted to award Carrington graduate Scott McTominay the armband – a huge honour for the boyhood Red to do so in such a fiery rivalry against Liverpool.

He starts along with Sofyan Amrabat and youngster Kobbie Mainoo in the middle of the park.

Luke Shaw has returned following his brief injury scare, while Jonny Evans and Raphael Varane are the preferred centre-back partnership today.

Marcus Rashford has been named on the bench again, with Antony and Alejandro Garnacho deployed on either flank and Rasmus Hojlund leading the line. The 20-year-old is still seeking his maiden Premier League goal, and opening his account at Anfield would certainly etch his name into club history; United have not scored at the stadium since 2018.
