Erik ten Hag believes United can go ‘head-to-head’ with Liverpool after doing so vs Bayern

Erik ten Hag believes Manchester United can put up a fight against Liverpool this Sunday following on from their midweek European miseries.

The Red Devils have to pick themselves and dust themselves off after Wednesday’s final hammer blow in their humiliating Champions League campaign, falling to a 1-0 defeat against Bayern Munich to round off their fourth-placed group-stage finish.

Ten Hag believes United went ‘head-to-head’ with Bayern, despite losing both meetings and in the latter, registering just one shot on target across the 90-minute contest. It looked as though, at Old Trafford, the side were reluctant to get out of second gear in fear of suffering a heavy defeat, and so played cautiously by refusing to commit on the attack.

Still, the manager will seemingly be looking for a similar display at the weekend, and fans would of course rather a more narrow scoreline than one similar to last season’s at Anfield.

Ten Hag confident in his squad

Speaking in this afternoon’s pre-match press conference, Ten Hag told the press (as cited by Manchester Evening News): “They’re [Liverpool] playing good, no doubt, but we have some more tough games in the last period. Bayern are a very good team, so we have seen we can go head-to-head with them. That is our challenge for Sunday as well.”
