‘We made it difficult’: Deflated Manchester United man reacts to humiliating Champions League campaign

A deflated Jonny Evans has reacted to Manchester United’s midweek miseries after exiting the Champions League at the group stage.

When the 35-year-old signed a one-year deal in the summer following his Leicester City release, nobody – Evans included – would’ve expected him to take to the field in a must-win European clash against giants Bayern Munich.

However, when Harry Maguire was forced off in the first half with an injury scare, Erik ten Hag called upon the experience of Evans, who was the only centre-back available on the bench, to see out the remaining 50 minutes alongside Raphael Varane.

United went on to create very little throughout the match, seemingly playing it cautiously in fear of avoiding an embarrassing scoreline on home turf, and the full-time whistle eventually signalled the end of their European campaign for the season after taking just four points from the six games played.

The Reds’ rock-bottom finish also meant that the prospect of a Europa League journey was ruled out, so the squad will now be overseeing a considerably quieter second half to the term.

Evans had higher expectations of United

Speaking post-match via RTE, Evans reacted: “You expect to get out of every group being Man United.

“I think we made it difficult for ourselves and to go into the last game needing to win and a result to go your way in the other side, the probability of that’s very small. Obviously, tonight playing against a good Bayern side and once they got the goal it was it was difficult then.”
