David de Gea drops hint over return to football amid Newcastle links

David de Gea has dropped a hint that he could be set to return to football.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper has been without a club since he left Manchester United as a free agent in the summer. It is believed the Spaniard turned down offers to move his career to Saudi Arabia, but he has yet to be employed by a new football club.

Newcastle United are the latest club to be linked with De Gea following the injury to first-choice stopper Nick Pope. The former Burnley man will be in the treatment room for over five months as a result.

There has been pressure from some, including Alan Pardew, for Newcastle manager Eddie Howe to make a move for De Gea.

De Gea has now fuelled speculation over his future by taking to Instagram to post an image of a pair of goalkeeper gloves as he stood in a field. The post was captioned: “Work, work, work.”

Meanwhile, Martin Dubravka has been reinstated to the starting line-up in Pope’s absence but it remains to be seen if Howe will make a move for a new keeper in January. He also has Loris Karius and Mark Gillespie in his ranks.

Newcastle take on AC Milan in the Champions League tonight.
