Manchester United not planning to activate clause in forward’s expiring contract

Anthony Martial faces an uncertain future.

That won’t come as a surprise to anyone that has followed his career at Manchester United. From the promising youngster who scored on his debut against Liverpool to the forward who plays like he has given up on football.

It’s hard to believe Martial is 28-years-old when you watch him play this season. He’s hardly leading by example for our new young forward, Rasmus Hojlund, who has been thrown the responsibility of being United’s main striker at 20-years-old.

Martial’s contract expires at the end of the season, although United have a clause to trigger a one-year extension in that deal.

A report from The Athletic suggests United do not intend to activate the option to extend Martial’s contract, though, which means they will try to find him a new club in the meantime or let him go for free at the end of the season.

The French forward was handed a five-year deal in 2019, but yet again failed to fulfil his promise on the pitch.

He has made 19 appearances this season but only seven of those were starts and, on a more worrying note, he is yet to complete a full game.

Fans cheered Martial’s substitution during Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth in the Premier League.

It very much depends on Hojlund’s fitness this week, but I would be surprised if Martial started against Bayern Munich or Liverpool. He doesn’t offer enough in attack and his demeanour sets a dangerous tone for the rest of our players.
