Dimitar Berbatov explains how frustrating it can be watching Manchester United

Manchester United’s results have been painfully inconsistent this season and to make matters worse our performances have been shambolic.

There’s nothing worse than watching your team – week after week – to feel they aren’t showing the required desire to win football matches. Or that they are unable to match the desire of our opponents, which was the case during the weekend when Bournemouth won 3-0 at Old Trafford.

The same applies for inconsistency. Last week we beat Chelsea 2-1 before losing 3-0 against Bournemouth three days later.

Of course, many of us went into this season with high expectations because Erik ten Hag enjoyed a brilliant first term at Old Trafford. The Reds qualified for the Champions League, won the Carabao Cup and reached the FA Cup final.

Sadly, this season things have gone backwards for Ten Hag and United. That explains why pundits are talking about the manager potentially getting the sack.

Former United striker Berbatov claims United would be higher up the Premier League table if consistently hadn’t been an issue this season.

Speaking in an interview with Betfair, as per the Manchester Evening News, Berbatov identified consistency as his biggest frustration with Ten Hag’s side: “Inconsistency is always frustrating,” he said. “It was the same when I was playing. Sometimes we’d have great games followed by two or three s**t games and then again you’d show what you can do.

“Of course back in the day, those performances weren’t as regular as they are now. When I watch the games now, I get p****d off and angry. I understand because I’ve been there and I know what can happen.

“It’s easier said than done, but Man United need to make sure they don’t wait until their backs are against the wall.

“Games like this against Chelsea happen when you show your energy, you press together and you want to show everyone that you’re playing for each other. It will probably happen again. The next game will probably be s*** again, so we’ll wait and see.”

United have two big fixtures this week against Bayern Munich and Liverpool.
