‘His presence, his personality’: Ten Hag singles out United stalwart who ‘strengthens’ the team for special praise

Erik ten Hag heaped praise on Luke Shaw after the defender recently returned from a long-term injury layoff.

Shaw has been an irreplaceable cog at the heart of Manchester United’s squad across his time as a Red and in particular the recent seasons, where his development has only continued in an upward trajectory.

Unfortunately for the player and the club, injuries have frequently plagued Shaw’s career and have consequently seen him miss such crucial fixtures. This campaign, he was ruled out in August after making just two outings and went on to miss 16 matches in all competitions with a muscle problem.

Now that he’s back in the fold and ready to graft, Ten Hag couldn’t be happier. Shaw has started four games on the bounce and is unlikely to be displaced anytime soon, with him even taking a stint at centre-back to accommodate the manager’s reuqests and squad’s needs.

Ten Hag lauds Shaw

When quizzed on the Englishman’s impact at Old Trafford, Ten Hag told the media (via ManUtd.com): “He is a player others can build on. He gives belief and confidence to other players. The teammates around him, they feel comfortable. He will deal with difficult situations, and he will set up and take initiative to create. It strengthens absolutely the team.

“So, it’s first in his presence, his personality, but also, he has the skill set with his physicality, he’s so strong, [he’s] also technical, very good. He is a high-profile player, so we are very happy he’s back in.”
