Injury setback forces Barcelona to enter race with Premier League club for ex-Manchester United star

Barcelona are reportedly mulling over a pursuit of David de Gea after Marc-Andre ter Stegen sustained a back injury, as per Sport cited by Chronicle Live.

The reigning La Liga champions would have to vie with Newcastle United for his signature and given that he’s currently a free agent, the goalkeeper’s preference could come down to whichever club is promising a higher wage.

On the other hand, De Gea has spent time in both his native Spain and England following his Manchester United release in July, so could opt to make a more permanent return home after 12 years in the North West. Prior to signing for the Red Devils, he worked his way through Atletico Madrid’s academy to eventually become their No.1.

De Gea set for mid-season transfer

At either club, the Spaniard will be well aware that his time between the sticks will only be for a brief spell; Nick Pope faces around four to five months out with a dislocated shoulder, while Ter Stegen must decide whether to have his back operated on, with him already ruled out of the remaining fixtures of the year.

Both sides are currently in the Champions League, though the Magpies’ fate is out of their hands while Barcelona have already qualified for the last 16.
