Manchester United’s match-winning hero tonight, Scott McTominay, has admitted the side’s performance against Newcastle United had a lasting impact on the squad.

The Red Devils fell to a 1-0 defeat last Saturday at St. James’ Park and while the scoreline may have been a narrow one, United were dominated across the pitch from the first blow of the whistle on Tyneside until the last.

Subsequent days of heavy criticism from fans, pundits and viewers will have certainly made its way through to the dressing room, and they’ll have known that anything less than a win against Chelsea tonight would leave the United faithful despondent after a tumultuous start to the season.

Cometh the hour, cometh the man – McTominay all but took the task upon himself of ensuring all three points stayed at Old Trafford, as he netted the Reds’ only goals of the game to seal a 2-1 victory and take them up to sixth place. He’s now the club’s top goalscorer in the Premier League with five to his name.

McTominay reacts

Speaking on Amazon Prime Video following the clash, the midfielder reacted: “I thought we started really, really well in the game and obviously the fans are really happy at the way that we started and reacted after a pretty abysmal display against Newcastle.

“To be honest, all the boys were so upset with how we coped with that game, it wasn’t anywhere near good enough and to come here tonight and win was a plus. It’s something we can build on.”
