Former Premier League defender Ashley Williams has criticised Manchester United fans for their treatment of Fred, who he believes has been missed in the team this season.
United have struggled in multiple departments this season – including midfield, but it doesn’t help that many of our key players have had long spells in the treatment room. On top of that, new signings Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat have been unable to hit the ground running.
Fred was one of the players that left Old Trafford during the summer after being sold to Turkish giants Fenerbahce for a small fee.
Now, Williams says that decision was a mistake.
They were speaking about Casemiro’s drop in form this term on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube show Vibe with Five. That is where Williams described Fred as the ‘Robin’ of the team.
“My opinion on the matter is, as good as he (Casemiro) is or was or whatever, and I’m not taking it away from him, sometimes you need a Robin to the Batman,” Williams said.
“And he has gone, and you lot [United fans] battered him forever, and he was like the butt of a lot of jokes in Fred.
“I just think that Fred is missed.”
Meanwhile, Fred is having a great time in Turkey after playing 14 games this season and Fenerbahce are unbeaten in those fixtures. The Brazilian has five goals to his name, too.
Fred has been unavailable for Fenerbahce in their last three Super Lig fixture, of which they have dropped points on two occasions.
