Jose Mourinho hails out-of-favour Manchester United defender

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has labelled Raphael Varane as the one who achieved the most from all the players that made their breakthrough under him.

The question was put to Mourinho, currently in charge of AS Roma, by a Sky Italia reporter and I’m a little bit disappointed that there was no mention of Scott McTominay.

Jokes aside, Mourinho named Varane and overlooked several top players of the past, including former Netherlands star Arjen Robben.

Varane was a teenager when he joined Mourinho at Real Madrid over a decade ago, before going on to win everything there is to win with Real Madrid and France.

“Varane has done everything,” Mourinho said, as quoted by United In Focus. “He won three Champions Leagues, he was world champion with France, captain until he stopped playing (for his country).

“He’s the one who reached the highest of all (my former youngsters).”

The 30-year-old faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford and it’s no wonder when he spends so much of his time out of the team injured. There’s a feeling that Erik ten Hag has lost patience with the French defender, although he would be naïve to sell him in January without any quality cover in the position.

This has led to speculation over moves to Bayern Munich or one of the Saudi Pro League clubs. There’s even been a suggestion from Lens manager Franck Haise that Varane is welcome back at his former club.
