Bruno Fernandes showed his sportsmanship tonight by giving Marcus Rashford the ball to take a crucial spot-kick against Everton.
Manchester United were already leading 1-0 at the time of the VAR call, thanks to Alejandro Garnacho’s early wonder goal at Goodison Park.
When Anthony Martial was fouled in the area, it was initially deemed simulation by the referee and the Frenchman was shown a yellow card. However, VAR then clocked Ashley Young’s clear foul and overturned the decision, leading to the booking being rescinded and a penalty being awarded.
In such a case, responsibility usually falls to Fernandes, however, he was quick to allow Rashford the chance to score his second goal of the term.
When quizzed on why he made the decision post-match, he replied: “I felt Marcus needed a little bit of confidence, [he] needed his goal. Marcus is an excellent penalty-taker, I’m 100 per cent sure that he could score that penalty so it’s not about who takes it, it’s about scoring the penalty and Marcus did it perfectly.”
