A new stage of decay at Old Trafford sees pieces of concrete from roof fall onto fans at women’s derby

Old Trafford is falling down’ is the latest chant used to mock Manchester United’s decaying stadium, but the sentiment unfortunately rang true during yesterday’s derby in M16.

United Women took on rivals Manchester City for the first-ever Women’s Super League derby held at Old Trafford, garnering a club-record attendance of over 45,000 fans in attendance. Despite captain Katie Zelem’s early converted penalty, the Blues were able to fight back and claim a 3-1 victory.

Amidst the highs and lows of the clash, two match-goers were left shocked in the concourse when two pieces of concrete allegedly fell from the ceiling and struck them. Pictures were shared on social media of the incident, which took place in block N2401.

It’s been evident for some time now that the stadium is in dire need of refurbishment and some TLC, and there are hopes that plans can begin to be put in place when Sir Jim Ratcliffe completes his 25 per cent buy-in in the coming weeks.
