Jonny Evans picks the greatest footballer of all time

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has made an attempt at settling the age-old debate of who the best footballer of all time is.

Evans recently secured a dream return to Old Trafford eight years after leaving the club to join West Bromwich Albion under Louis van Gaal.

The Northern Ireland international went on to join Leicester and cement his place as one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders before eventually rejoining the club he made a name for himself at.

Evans has also reached an impressive three figures in caps for Northern Ireland and now, he has paid homage to his nation’s most iconic player as he settles the debate of the greatest player of all time.

As part of a question and answer session on the official Manchester United website, the centre-back snubbed his former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo and instead picked George Best, another famous number seven for Manchester United.

“The greatest footballer of all time? I have to go George Best, don’t I? I think being a Northern Irishman and a Man United man,” Evans said.

“He was kind of someone, you know, we were always sort of looking up to and he was held in such a high regard all around the world but also at Man United. Yeah, he was just a bit of a genius wasn’t he?”

Evans’ return to the club was questioned by some sections but he has impressed in his first couple of months, even climbing above Raphael Varane in the pecking order under Erik ten Hag.

He is currently out with an injury and is not taking part in this week’s internationals.

  1. Greatest footballer is a stupid question, Best was brilliant, in what way was he better than Schmeichel? And in what way were either of them better then Roy Keane, Duncan Edwards, Cantona and, and, , and, well, you know the names.
Greatest in a particular position is all one could argue even if one simplifies it to goalie, defender, midfield, attack.
I’d love to have seen peak Best in peak Fergie’s United: Ronaldo in the Busby Babes? Oh, I think he’d have managed😉
