Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has reflected on a lacklustre start to the season for the club and their debilitating injury woes.
The Red Devils have overseen their worst start to a campaign in 61 years, having sustained nine losses in their opening 18 games in all competitions.
Whilst the team certainly have the quality to see out results, there’s no doubt that the ever-growing injury list has been a mitigating factor in United’s form.
Take a look at the picture below for reference of just how dire the situation has been for Erik ten Hag and his squad:
Shaw a ‘big miss’ for United, says Scholes
Scholes has picked one Red from the current crop of sidelined players who he believes the side are sorely missing. Speaking on the Webby and O’Neill YouTube channel, the former midfielder said: “Luke Shaw’s a big miss. He gives you real balance on the left-hand side. He gets you up the pitch with his pace. I think he’s been a huge miss.”
He added: “We’ve had so many injuries. He’s [Ten Hag] emphasised he wants a settled back four and a holding midfield player. He’s not been able to pick a settled back four all season. Amrabat came in late, [and] Casemiro picked up an injury. It’s just not been right.”
Shaw’s last outing came in the 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur on August 19 – just the second game of the term. Following the full-time whistle, it was confirmed that the England star had injured a muscle in his leg and would be sidelined for some time, with a return date still unknown.
