Manchester United set to have upper hand in pursuit of 23 y/o centre-back as Chelsea register their interest

Chelsea are reportedly prepared to rival Manchester United in a January approach for Jean-Clair Todibo, as per the Metro.

The Red Devils have been forced to navigate an injury-plagued squad this term and while they certainly still have the quality to see out results, there’s no doubt that it’s had an impact on their woeful form.

One area of the team that has been particularly hit hard is the backline; last season’s defensive talisman Lisandro Martinez was ruled out after a re-aggravation of his metatarsal fracture, and he is not expected back in action until the New Year.

Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have all been absent at some stage through illness or injury, while Jonny Evans is the latest to be sidelined with a thigh strain – and that’s just the centre-halves.

Chelsea eyeing Silva’s successor

Down at Stamford Bridge, Mauricio Pochettino has also been dealt similar blows with young Blues Wesley Fofana and Trevoh Chalobah nursing long-term issues. Thiago Silva, while still one of Chelsea’s most consistent performers, is now 39 years old and it remains to be seen how much longer he’ll brace top-flight football, with his current deal set to expire in the summer of 2024.

Taking both clubs’ situations into account, it’s clear to see why Todibo has become an active target for the Premier League giants. The 23-year-old has been a stalwart for his side as of late and with Nice owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe closing in on a 25 per cent buy-in at United, he could prove pivotal in swaying the Frenchman towards an Old Trafford switch.
