Jonny Evans ruled out of action for a few weeks

Jonny Evans has been ruled out of action for the next few weeks due to the injury he picked up on Wednesday night in Manchester United’s Champions League defeat at Copenhagen.

The Northern Ireland international suffered a thigh strain early in the first half and had to be replaced by Raphael Varane. It was Evans’ first Champions League appearance for over a decade but it ended in agony.

A statement from the club read via ManUtd.com: “Jonny Evans will be out of action for the next few weeks with injury.

“The Northern Ireland defender suffered a thigh strain in the first half of our Champions League game with FC Copenhagen in Denmark on Wednesday.”

The Sun understands that United hope to have Evans back available within three-to-four weeks – but that means he will miss some important games.

Manchester United take on Luton Town in the Premier League this evening and it remains to be seen if it will be Varane who steps in for Evans. The French defender has not performed well this season and looked a shadow of his former self when he came on against Copenhagen.

United then twice threw away the lead to lose the game 4-3, with Marcus Rashford also getting sent off.

The only other player Ten Hag can look to right now is Victor Lindelof because Harry Maguire – as things stand – is one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Meanwhile, on top of the Luton game, Evans could miss clashes against Newcastle and Chelsea over the next month. There’s also a difficult trip to Galatasaray coming up in the Champions League.

Evans joined United on a free transfer in the summer and I don’t think he thought starting Champions League games would be a possibility. It just shows how bad our injury situation has been this season.
