Luton Town boss Rob Edwards is keen for former Reds Tahith Chong and Teden Mengi to not get caught up in the emotions of their Old Trafford return.
The two players signed for the Hatters following their promotion to the top flight earlier this year, ahead of their maiden Premier League campaign.
Chong, 23, completed three separate loan spells at Werder Bremen, Club Brugge and Birmingham City respectively before leaving for the Midlands outfit permanently. After a year with the Blues, he opted to make the move to Luton.
On the other hand, Mengi endured an injury-plagued United career, which went on to impact his promotion to the senior squad. He was loaned to Birmingham and Derby County, though the latter ended prematurely due to a recurrent hamstring issue. In August, he swapped M16 for Kenilworth Road.
The pair will walk down the tunnel tomorrow for the first time as away players, so it’s bound to tug on the heartstrings of the Carrington graduates.
Edwards lauds United’s coaching
“We’ve got them at our football club now, their history is their history,” Edwards said on the situation, as quoted by Luton Today. “They’ve had amazing upbringings at Manchester United and have worked with some fantastic coaches and other brilliant players. We’re hopefully now going to see the best years of them with us.
”I’m sure they’re both looking forward to it, we’re trying not to make it too much of an emotional occasion, they haven’t got to do anything they haven’t been doing before.
“They’ve been doing great for us, they’ve been brilliant people, had a real impact and positive impacts in the games so far for us, so the big message from me is you haven’t got to do anything special just because it’s Manchester United and it’s your former club. I know it’s a big occasion for them, just go and enjoy it and keep doing what they’ve been doing.”
