Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has leapt to the defence of under-fire manager Erik ten Hag.
Pressure has been mounting on Ten Hag in recent weeks but two successive 3-0 home defeats to Man City and Newcastle has led to media reports about the uncertainty of the manager’s future.
The Times ran a report on Thursday suggesting members of the hierarchy were considering alternatives to Ten Hag. These claims also stressed that some players were beginning to question the manager’s methods.
Of course, it doesn’t help that Ten Hag has had several injuries to deal with in his squad. Right now we are without Casemiro, Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia. It really is no wonder that our defence looks so bad every week.
McTominay has publicly backed the manager, though, and he has vowed that things will improve.
“There’s more that goes into it when you’re not playing well and you’re not doing so well,” McTominay told club media with ManUtd.com.
“I know the fans don’t want to hear that, they want to see results and performances and I think they want to see the players smiling and happy. It’s not quite happening at the moment, but I’m 100 percent sure that the manager can put that into practice and it can come off. I’m sure of that.
“It’s not quite happening at the moment, sometimes that’s football, but I feel like for us in that dressing room we have to stay tight and keep a clear head, and we can’t get too emotional with everything that surrounds us. We’ve got to block it all out.”
United have a chance to get back to winning ways on Saturday, with an early trip to Fulham. The Reds cannot afford to slip up at Craven Cottage.
