Man City ready to test Manchester United’s resolve for fan-favourite midfield prospect – report

Manchester City are looking to add to Manchester United’s woes by prising young starlet Kobbie Mainoo away from Old Trafford, as per FourFourTwo.

Long story short – there’s no chance.

The report suggests that Pep Guardiola has eyed Mainoo as a potential option to add to his star-studded squad as they look to continue his development away from Carrington.

City could try and test United’s resolve amidst the madness happening on and off the pitch; a diabolical start in all competitions has led to reports suggesting that Erik ten Hag may not last the season in the dugout.

Still, Stockport-born Mainoo has waited patiently for his chance to showcase his abilities in the senior setup, with the current term deemed to be his breakthrough campaign. The injury he sustained on the pre-season tour has delayed his involvement though, and he is yet to make an appearance in the first-team in 2023/24.

Mainoo here to stay

Prior to the 18-year-old being sidelined, it was clear that Ten Hag would utilise Mainoo frequently to help him transition seamlessly from the U21s to the big leagues and hopefully, we can see him make his long-awaited comeback in the coming weeks.

There’s absolutely no way that Ten Hag would sanction the midfielder’s exit this early in his career – let alone to a rival like City. Even Mainoo himself would know that the move would see his reputation tarnished with the Old Trafford faithful, and he’ll be well aware of how highly-rated he is by supporters currently.

  1. Yeah, ETH wouldn’t sanction the move, but ultimately it comes down to the player himself. If he thinks there’s a better chance of advancement in Plasticland he’s going to take it. I can’t criticise anyone who wants out of the current shambles – arguably: why would you stay if ambitious and. wanting medals, trophies, awards.
Hope he stays, tho – boi crackee I do.
