Erik ten Hag addresses incident between Garnacho and Onana as youngster faces potential ban

Erik ten Hag has addressed the widely-covered incident regarding Alejandro Garnacho and Andre Onana, with the Argentine facing a potential ban.

On Wednesday, Garnacho shared a picture to his X, formerly Twitter, account of himself,  Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay celebrating with Andre Onana after his last-gasp penalty heroics against Copenhagen. He captioned the post with two gorilla emojis before editing it to feature just the photo, and then deleting it entirely after being informed of the potential racist connotations.

Garnacho has yet to address the matter himself since getting rid of the post, but he has been contacted by the Football Association so they can gauge his observations and intentions behind it. Should they deem him guilty of breaching their sensitive social media post guidelines, he could be dealt a fine and a ban.

Meanwhile, Onana spoke in support of the 19-year-old yesterday with a message shared to both Instagram and X. He said: “People cannot choose what I should be offended by. I know exactly what @agarnacho7 [Garnacho] meant: power & strength. This matter should go no further.”

Ten Hag was also quizzed on the matter in today’s pre-match press conference, replying (via Manchester Evening News): “Not in this moment [I am not concerned], we are talking with the FA, what you see, I can confirm that and I want to emphasise we are together, we are united, you saw that with the post of Andre Onana.”
