Newcastle United could be set to make a January move for Scott McTominay if the anticipated ban for Sandro Tonali materialises.
The Magpies are beginning to prepare for life without new signing Tonali.
Tonali, 23, is expected to receive a 10-month ban after being investigated for alleged illegal betting on football matches, as per The Mirror.
This means Eddie Howe will be left with a major hole to fill, just four months after signing the Italy international from AC Milan.
While Fulham’s Joao Palhinha is another option on Howe’s wishlist, The Athletic understands Newcastle will consider reigniting their interest in McTominay.
Palhinha was on the verge of joining Bayern Munich in the summer but a deal collapsed late in the transfer window. It remains to be seen if the Bundesliga interest will go back in for the Portuguese defensive midfielder. Furthermore, Palhinha agreed to a new contract at Fulham until 2028, so it won’t be a cheap deal to get across the line.
Neither will McTominay.
The Manchester United midfielder have been in goalscoring form for club and country (Scotland) this season.
Maybe that will give Ten Hag a reason to turn down any offers unless United are offered a transfer fee too good to turn down?
