Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov believes Harry Maguire can turn his career around if he can stay concentrated when given the chance to perform.
Harry Maguire could be set for a second consecutive start for Manchester United on Saturday against his former club Sheffield United.
The centre-back, who was stripped of the captaincy role during the summer, has been overlooked by Erik ten Hag a lot this season but he started against Brentford alongside Jonny Evans.
Now it’s a matter of Ten Hag having a depleted defence due to injury and he may need to call upon Maguire again in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, Maguire is still being called up to the England squad and started in their Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy this week. Gareth Southgate has continued to back one of his most trusted players, but the England manager would like to see him get more minutes at club level.
Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov hopes Maguire can turn things around in his career and find redemption at the end of the tunnel.
Dimitar Berbatov told Betfair, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News: “Harry Maguire was good against Brentford. The only thing he can do is stay concentrated when given the chance to perform and not make silly mistakes.
“When he speaks, you can see that Harry is confident in his ability, when he was given the captains armband, his confidence obviously increased, but so did his ego.
“Now the captain’s armband has been taken away, his ego is hurt. He needs to start rebuilding his relationship with the fans again. The chance is there for him to show he can handle everything again.
“Maybe, like we saw in the Beckham documentary, Harry is going through that tough time right now but hopefully, in the end he can find redemption at the end of his own movie.”
Maguire deserves credit for his performance against Brentford prior to the international break. Every solid performance should give his confidence a boost.
Ten Hag speaks to the media on Friday afternoon when he is expected to answer questions on returning players as well as those he has available.
