Manchester United begin scouting 19 y/o Portugal star ahead of potential summer move

Manchester United have begun scouting Benfica’s Joao Neves and could make a move for the teenage starlet in the summer, as per Florian Plettenberg.

An approach for the midfielder is ruled out in the January window, with Erik ten Hag keen to acquire a young and creative player to his ranks for the 2024/2025 campaign.

Neves has become a staple in Benfica’s starting 11 since breaking through into the first-team and played a key role in their Primeira Liga winning campaign last term.

The 19-year-old was granted his senior debut for Portugal on Monday evening in a Euro 2024 qualifier vs Bosnia and Herzegovina, and he’ll certainly be fighting for a spot at the tournament next summer.

Neves’ release clause

A factor that may raise eyebrows for United is that Neves recently penned a new contract with his club, which included a release clause of €120 million (£104m) – so any interested sides across Europe will need to break the bank for the sought-after prospect.
