Gareth Southgate explains Mason Mount omission from England squad

England manager Gareth Southgate has explained why he left Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount out of his latest squad.

Mount hasn’t pulled up trees at Old Trafford, but he has had to deal with an injury and shown glimpses of what he can bring to the team.

However, former United striker Louis Saha has been critical of the England midfielder, who he expects more from as he settles at Old Trafford.

Being left out of the England squad will come as a blow for Mount, but Southgate hasn’t ruled out selecting him for future squads. Apparently it’s a matter of getting back to a certain level physically and not performing as well as other players available in the same position.

“Physically he’s getting back up to a level,” Southgate told reporters, as per ESPN. “He’s been an important player for us and we like him a lot.

“But I didn’t think he’d done enough to be ahead of the others at this moment in time.”

Mount doesn’t need to worry about England or getting back into the squad. If he performs well for United that will happen.

It probably doesn’t help his case that Tottenham’s James Maddison has started the season brightly, but he’s had a few months under his belt without any injuries getting in the way.
