Erik ten Hag sent on Scott McTominay in the 87th minute of Manchester United’s clash with Brentford yesterday, with the Reds trailing 1-0 in the closing stages.
The Scotsman entered the fold with one mission – take something from the game. Three straight home defeats would’ve been far too tough to stomach for the fans after the club’s recent results.
Luckily, McTominay came in clutch to do exactly what the manager would’ve hoped of him. A 93rd-minute strike levelled the tie to 1-1, and a 97th-minute header claimed all three points against the deflated Bees as Old Trafford erupted.
Post-match, the manager joked about what he’d instructed McTominay before sending him on the pitch.
“I said, score two goals!” Ten Hag told Manchester Evening News. “I said put Christian Eriksen down at left fullback, and you [McTominay] go up and make the box. Bring the energy.”
