The former United manager had been with Lady Cathy for over 50 years, having met as teenagers, so we can only send love and strength in his direction as he comes to terms with the loss. Lady Cathy had been a rock at his side through everything, and Sir Alex always let it be known the impact her unwavering support had on him through his prosperous career.

When he retired in 2013, he said: “I must pay tribute to my family, their love and support has been essential.

“My wife Cathy has been the key figure throughout my career, providing a bedrock of both stability and encouragement. Words are not enough to express what this has meant to me.”

To pay their respects, the players will wear black armbands during tomorrow’s Premier League game at Old Trafford. Flags will also be lowered to half-mast at the stadium.
