Fabrizio Romano reveals how much Erik ten Hag controls transfer business at Manchester United

Fabrizio Romano has provided insight into Manchester United’s transfer business following Erik ten Hag’s arrival.

The Old Trafford faithful are well aware that the manager strongly influences the ins and outs at Carrington, as his desire to sign players with an Eredivisie/Dutch connection is a running joke among supporters.

Andre Onana, Antony and Lisandro Martinez all played under Ten Hag at Ajax, with the latter two following him straight to United when he was appointed boss.

He worked with Sofyan Amrabat during his time at Utrecht, while others such as Christian Eriksen, Mason Mount, Tyrell Malacia and Wout Weghorst have all played in the Netherlands’ top division.

Romano on Ten Hag

Romano – speaking in his exclusive Daily Briefing with CaughtOffside – confirmed that Ten Hag does have a major say in the workings of United across the windows.

That’s not to say it’s significantly more than managers at other clubs, however, with some, it’s left mostly to sporting directors and other figures in the hierarchy.

He said: “With Ten Hag, he shared the vision with the club, as players like Hojlund, Onana, Amrabat were strongly wanted by the Dutchman, so he is having a key role in re-building this squad.

“This is something fairly normal in football, it’s not particularly surprising, but as I said it varies from club to club to some degree, and it gives you an idea of United’s plans to work with this manager for the present and future.”
