Andre Onana is reportedly hesitant to leave Manchester United and partake in next year’s AFCON tournament with Cameroon, as per ESPN.

The goalkeeper has overseen a shaky start to life at Old Trafford, having conceded 18 goals in his first 10 games.

He has also come under fire for numerous blunders, with recent reports suggesting that United’s opposition has been advised to exploit Onana’s weakness of staying deep in his own area and on his goal line.

Altay Bayindir was acquired to provide coverage following Dean Henderson’s exit but the Turkish international is yet to feature for the Red Devils – Onana has been utilised in all four competitions thus far.

Should Onana leave for the tournament in January, the expectation is that Bayindir would fill the No.1 void in his absence. However, poor form has led the Cameroonian to rethink his international commitments and instead, keep all his focus on United.

Onana’s return to international duty

The 27-year-old had made the decision to retire from his national team following a disagreement with head coach Rigobert Song at the World Cup, and Erik ten Hag was under the impression that this would continue to be the case when he signed from Inter Milan in the summer.

Onana then changed his mind when he was called up for the country’s final AFCON qualifier in September after facing pressure from the Cameroon FA and the government.

ESPN states: “Onana told Ten Hag and United bosses that he had no plans to return to the Cameroon set-up. However, a source has told ESPN that the Dutchman is sympathetic to the goalkeeper’s situation and won’t interfere in his decision.”
