The unfortunate news about Lisandro Martinez requiring further surgery on his reoccurring foot injury was confirmed by Erik ten Hag this afternoon.

The manager was joined by Raphael Varane as they addressed questions from the media ahead of Manchester United’s Champions League clash against Turkish champions Galatasaray.

Martinez fractured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot in a Europa League game against Sevilla last season and did not return to action until the start of the season.

Last night, a report suggested Martinez faces at least three months on the sidelines. This comes as a blow at a time Ten Hag can’t afford more players to join the club’s injury list.

Martinez experienced discomfort during defeats to Brighton and Bayern Munich, despite reportedly taking painkillers ahead of those games, and it has now been determined that he needs surgery.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the clash against Galatasaray, Ten Hag confirmed that Martinez will go under the knife again.

“I can confirm, yeah,” Ten Hag said as quoted by ManUtd.com. “Licha Martinez will have to undergo surgery.”

That was the only update on Martinez from Ten Hag, so the manager is deciding to keep his cards close to his chest on when we can expect the World Cup winner to return to the side.

Hopefully Raphael Varane can stay fit…
