Mason Mount has reacted to Manchester United’s 1-0 upset to Crystal Palace – their fifth loss of the season.

The Red Devils have now overseen their worst start to a league campaign in 34 years, having tasted defeat four times in the opening seven matches.

Mount returned to the fold against the Eagles midweek and registered his first assist for United before being withdrawn at half-time. He started again today but failed to make the kind of impact that fans were expecting from their £55 million signing.

Post-match, he reflected on the team’s performance while speaking to MUTV: “Disappointing. We know we need to win these games and it’s been a difficult start. We need to look at the areas we need to improve on and we need to improve because we want to win games. There are areas that we need to look at. It’s a frustrating one to take.

“We want to perform for them [the fans], we want to win games for them. We’ll improve, we need to go away and look at some areas that just weren’t there today.”

Regarding the hamstring injury he has just recovered from, the England star added: “A tough start with the injury, a frustrating one but I used that time to look at areas I can improve on and coming back into the team last game it felt good. And then today, keep pushing and felt good as well but you don’t want to lose games.”

United in European action next

Next up for Erik ten Hag’s side is a Champions League group-stage clash against Galatasaray. They are seeking a first win in the competition this term and Tuesday provides the chance to bounce back.

A positive run of form now is absolutely crucial before the morale drops more than it already has.
