The injuries problems Manchester United have faced already this season are causing havoc, but the Reds are seemingly set to receive a boost with two players nearing a return.

United start their Champions League campaign this week with a trip to Bayern Munich and Erik ten Hag will want to see a response from his players after a slow start to their Premier League campaign.

It sounds like Mason Mount and Raphael Varane could be in contention to face the Bundesliga giants, although it’s probably more likely that they both return against Burnley in the league on Saturday.

Speaking after United’s 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton, Ten Hag spoke about the possibility of Mount and Varane returning to the squad.

“Both are in a good place,” Ten Hag said, as per ManUtd.com. “They are shortly coming [towards] a return.”

It can’t be emphasised enough how much we’ve missed Varane in recent weeks because he is the gel that sticks our defence together. Lisandro Martinez doesn’t look a shadow of his former self alongside Victor Lindelof, who hasn’t started this season like he ended last term.

Meanwhile, Mount’s return would push Scott McTominay back down the pecking order, with Christian Eriksen starring as a substitute most weeks.

It hardly helps that we’ve been without players that would feature in our line-up every week.
