Manchester United deny they covered up assault allegations against Antony

Manchester United have denied any claims of a cover-up of assault allegations made against Antony by his ex-girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin.

Antony, who signed for Manchester United in 2022, has denied that he physically assaulted his former girlfriend.

Cavallin, a Brazilian DJ, released photographs and WhatsApp messages to Brazilian publication UOL along with fresh allegations against the winger, who was quick to deny that he physically abusive towards his ex.

A statement from Antony’s social media read: “I can calmly state that the accusations are false and that the evidence already produced and the other evidence that will be produced demonstrate that I am innocent of the accusations made. I trust that the ongoing police investigations will demonstrate the truth about my innocence.”

However, one of Cavallin’s accusations suggests that the club despatched a player support officer to the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Manchester, where she alleges Antony assaulted her. Her legal team claim that a club doctor was called to assess her so that she would not visit a public hospital.

The case is being handled by Sao Paulo Civil Police alongside Greater Manchester Police.

On Wednesday, Manchester United broke their silence on the allegations after Brazil dropped Antony from their squad.

The club’s statement read (via ManUtd.com): “Manchester United acknowledges the allegations made against Antony and notes that the Police are conducting enquiries.

“Pending further information, the club will be making no further comments.“As a club, we are taking this matter seriously, with consideration of the impact of these allegations and subsequent reporting will have on survivors of abuse.”

Following the official statement, which has been criticised by many as a non-statement, a spokesperson from the club was quoted denying the suggestion they covered up the allegations.

“Any suggestion that the club covered-up these allegations is categorically false,” a spokesperson told The Mirror.

The same report by The Mirror states that it is understood that a member of United’s club staff did arrange for a private doctor to visit the individual. However, it is claimed that there was no indication that injuries were the result of any form of violence.

Just another grey cloud hanging over our football club.
