Sergio Reguilon talks all things Manchester United ahead of club debut

Sergio Reguilon is awaiting his first outing as a Manchester United player and he’s certainly eager to represent the 20-time English champions.

The Spaniard joined Manchester United on deadline day in a loan move from Tottenham Hotspur, with Erik ten Hag seeking coverage on the left flank in Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia’s absences, as both players are sidelined with injuries.

Given that United want to compete on all fronts this term, having depth in each position is non-negotiable. Ten Hag has seemingly opted for experience over youth, too; Alvaro Fernandez is a natural left-back and was available following Shaw’s layoff, but the manager played Diogo Dalot out of position before signing Reguilon. Fernandez, 20, has since completed a loan move to Granada.

Reguilon came through the ranks with European giants Real Madrid and spent all of his youth and senior career in his native Spain until 2020 when he joined Spurs. He then completed a stint with La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid before returning to North London in the summer, though he wasn’t part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans.

He’ll now be looking to prove his abilities in the Premier League again, and should he excel as a Red, the club could even look to make his transfer permanent at the end of the campaign.

When arriving at Carrington, the 26-year-old was met with some familiar faces around the place; Casemiro and Raphael Varane share the Los Blancos connection with their new teammate, so were quick to make him feel at home.

He told club media via ManUtd.com: “When I arrived, they [Varane and Casemiro] were there to welcome me. They have given me [some help with] the houses and also life in Manchester.

“For me, I knew many players before, like Bruno [Fernandes] and [Andre] Onana, so I know some people here already.”

On playing for one of England’s most successful sides, he added: “When I was a kid and playing video games with my brother, you would always pick this type of club. For me, it’s a dream.”

Reguilon has been made to wait slightly longer for his debut due to the September international break, so it’ll likely come when the Reds return to action with a home clash against Brighton and Hove Albion on September 16 – and he’s familiar with Old Trafford’s electric atmosphere, which is a bonus for larger sporting events.

When you go to play at Old Trafford, it’s a really difficult game. My first occasion was good, we won, and the second we draw [drew]. But the atmosphere – you can see it in the stadium – is something special.”
