Mauricio Pochettino stayed tight-lipped when asked about Marc Cucurella’s situation at Chelsea, but admitted change could be imminent.

Manchester United submitted a loan offer for the defender on Tuesday in a bid to acquire coverage for injured left-back duo Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

The Red Devils had compiled a shortlist of targets – one of which they aimed to be brought in by Friday’s transfer deadline. Cucurella, Sergio Reguilon, Marcos Alonso and Nicolas Tagliafico were all outlined as options.

Eventually, they settled on Spanish international Cucurella, who is the joint most expensive full-back in Premier League history. He signed from Brighton and Hove Albion for £60 million last year but has failed to replicate the same form he displayed at the Amex, so United will be hoping to reignite it.

Pochettino opted to start the 25-year-old in Chelsea’s Carabao Cup tie on Wednesday evening, which marked Cucurella’s first appearance of the season, having been an unused substitute in the first three league games.

Pochettino talks Cucurella

When asked about Cucurella’s situation amid the United interest, Pochettino said (via Manchester Evening News): “I don’t know anything. Maybe you know better than me.

“All the players that are involved every day in the training ground who are training with us are in our plans,” he continued. “And then, like you know, things happen because it is the decision of both parts, the player and the club.

“If something happens in the next few days, we’ll communicate to you.”
