Manchester United football director John Murtough held talks with the women’s team on Tuesday to explain the club’s stance on Mason Greenwood.
It was confirmed on Monday that Greenwood will leave Old Trafford after the club concluded its internal investigation into the striker.
The 21-year-old was arrested in January 2022 and has been suspended by the club ever since. Greenwood was arrested on suspicion of several offences including attempted rape.
However, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges against Greenwood in February.
The episode has resulted in tensions between the women’s team and the club’s hierarchy. One can only imagine that chief executive Richard Arnold is no longer a popular figure on the inside, which may explain why he may have asked John Murtough to elaborate on their stance to the women’s squad instead.
According to the Daily Mail, Murtough briefed Marc Skinner’s squad on Tuesday – 24 hours after their announcement.
It is believed Murtough outlined the processes of the internal investigation and the reasons behind their final decision. The Mail suggest the meeting ended positively with the players accepting Murtough’s explanation.
Lioness trio Mary Earps, Ella Toone and Katie Zelem were not present at the meeting following their defeat in the World Cup final on Sunday.

Foolish decision
It’s a harshly decision make against Mason Greenwood by the club he love too much from 7yrs of his aged, what I know we all make mistakes in lives ,the man united management think they have more evidence than the crown prosecutor who dropped the charges against him that is ridiculous and racism. Only let them revised their decision before it’s late .
The leadership of the club lack authority, they wrong.
When it will happen to your brother, son, etc
Then you would know that there’s something called “”forgiving and forgetting””
But because it isn’t you affected, then you ought to judge in anyway you “wish.”
YOUR JUDGEMENT MAYBE BECOME HIS BLESSING IN DISGUISE…..To Manchester united women team and it’s opposing women crew
Our branches in Africa are denouncing their membership and support of Man United. This is barbaric to treat an African child like this. You have kilked his confidence … forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trrsspass against us….is money the real reason…cheers manunited. We’ll take our support somewhere else…
Bad decision on that innocent soul after all the charges were by the court…so what happened to the girlfriend that framed everything up,she will be living freely after all she did to this guy career… Tomorrow if United is not doing well they’ll not understand where the curse is coming from,God is not sleeping…Mad people everywhere.
No need to take that decision after all charges were dropped against him. Unfair decision by the women’s football team.
If it is the the decision, some of us are ready to also to departure from Manchester United as fans.
