Manchester United in talks with Jonny Evans over permanent deal

Manchester United are in talks to sign Jonny Evans on a permanent basis.

The 35-year-old returned to the club this summer on a short-term deal to help provide cover for Manchester United’s pre-season tour.

That contract has now expired.

Erik ten Hag revealed during his press conference that talks are ongoing with Evans, who was sat in the director’s box for United’s 1-0 win over Wolves on Monday night.

“In this moment, he is not (under contract) but we are talking,” Ten Hag said, as quoted by ManUtd.com. “We will see. We are in talks and when we have news we will bring it.”

There was a concern in defence on Monday night with Lisandro Martinez forced off at half-time with an injury. The Argentine was replaced by Victor Lindelof.

Evans will have a number of defenders ahead of him in the pecking order at United, but at 35, I can see why he’d prefer to spend more time at Old Trafford than playing regularly elsewhere. Moreover, Harry Maguire is set to remain at United after turning down a move to West Ham.

That said, Ten Hag confirmed at his press conference that Martinez has returned to training at least. We hope he’s available for the trip to Tottenham on Saturday.
