Raphael Varane has confirmed that Lisandro Martinez was substituted due to an ankle injury against Wolverhampton Wanderers last night.
Manchester United oversaw a narrow but crucial 1-0 victory in their return to Premier League action but were undoubtedly the second-best team on the night.
Martinez also made his competitive comeback in the match after his campaign was cut short last season with a metatarsal injury, in what came as a huge blow to Erik ten Hag and the club.
He seemingly sustained a small issue, though, in the first half of the clash. The Argentine was replaced by Victor Lindelof at half-time, with fans assuming it was because Martinez had been shown an early yellow card, and that the manager wouldn’t want to risk a further booking after the interval.
Varane sparks injury concern over Martinez
However, when speaking with the media post-match, Varane, who scored the only goal of the game, revealed the actual reason behind the substitution. He told BBC Sport: “A little problem on his [Martinez’s] ankle, tendon. We’ll see but I don’t think it’s a big deal. We’ll see how he is this week.”
Next up for the Reds is an away trip to face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday in North London.
