Erik ten Hag sends strong message to Harry Maguire amid West Ham rumours

Erik ten Hag has sent a warning to Harry Maguire about his Manchester United future after the club accepted a £30 million offer from West Ham for the centre-back.

West Ham were given the green light after having a £30m bid accepted by United for Maguire last week.

Maguire looks set to leave United are not only losing his place in the team, but the role of captaincy too which would have came as a blow to the England international.

It goes without saying that Ten Hag is settled on his preferred centre-back pairing of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez. I’d question whether Maguire is ahead of Victor Lindelof and we’re being linked with a number of centre-backs that most would consider to be an upgrade over the West Ham bound defender.

“For Harry, he has to fight for his place,” Ten Hag told reporters, as per the Manchester Evening News. “He has the ability to be a top-class centre-back, he is the best for England so why shouldn’t he be the best for us?

“But he has to prove it. When he is not confident enough to go with that fight then he has to go, he has to make the decision. But I am happy with him.

“We don’t have a squad with 11 players. Last year proved definitely we need all the players, so you need high-level players who are maybe not starting but that can change, so there is an internal competition and everyone has to fight for his place.

“For many players that counts, when they are good they will get their games but no one can play all the games and finally, you find out what is the best team.

“In the squad now, all the positions are double and every player has the perspective to fight for his place. Then you have to show with your contribution it’s the best team performance. It is up to the players if they have the game time or less.”

Maguire is under contract at United until 2025 and it is believed that he will be paid off to take a lower salary elsewhere.

  1. If i were Maguire i would leave man utd in search of more regular playing time to revive his career.
He’s not just an erik ten hag type of player.

  2. Maguire is an old fashioned stationary CB not capable of performing Ten Hag’s tactical system . For him to be a relatively unused squad player will cost 20 million in wages and a further 30 million in lost transfer over the remaining two years of his contract . An FFP loss of 50 million .

  3. Mags is a very good player. We saw how he played for England. Just coildt not get going with Man U and ETH style of playing
He will do well at West Ham

  4. Some people believe Maguire can not cope with Ten Hag style of game tactics, I personally don’t agree with that, Maguire has lost his composure and his confidence, even if given a regular playing time in Manchester United, he is bound to make gross mistakes. It’s better for him to take a bow and leave now. Maguire will definitely perform well elsewhere
