Manchester United send scout to Ligue 1 curtain-raiser

Manchester United have been linked with OGC Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo as a possible replacement for Harry Maguire, should the England international complete a move to West Ham.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has reported that a Manchester United scout is in attendance at tonight’s match between Nice and Lille.

This claim has been recited by Get French Football News, as well as a bonus suggestion that the scout is also monitoring Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram (22) during the Ligue 1 opener.

All of this simply suggests that United remain active in the transfer market and the scouts are trying to help Ten Hag find the best solutions in the market.

The scout in question is at the Allianz Riviera tonight, with the duo in question reportedly valued between €40-50m. Nice will be aiming to keep the pair for the 2023/24 season, but money talks in football.

The match between Nice and Lille finished 1-1 and Thuram came off after 57 minutes.

According to Statman Dave, Todibo had 87% pass accuracy throughout the game and touched the ball 63 times. The defender completed 45 passes, made four clearances and won 3/5 ground duels. It was an impressive display capped off by two dribbles out of defence.

Todibo, 23, would be expected to come in as an understudy to Raphael Varane and compete with Victor Lindelof for that back-up centre-back role.

United have also been linked with a move for Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard.

Only time will tell who Ten Hag will opt to sign for his defensive department between now and transfer deadline day.
