Fabrizio Romano has shared his understanding of Dean Henderson’s situation at Manchester United.

All summer, it’s been expected that the goalkeeper will leave the Red Devils on a permanent move to Nottingham Forest – where he spent the 2022/2023 campaign on loan.

His season was cut short on January 14, though, after he sustained a thigh injury during Forest’s Premier League clash with Leicester City. He returned to Carrington at the end of the term to continue his rehabilitation and is yet to feature for either side since the beginning of the year, despite being with United for their pre-season fixtures over the past month.

Henderson’s lack of action is complicating his Old Trafford departure and Steve Cooper’s side are now closing in on the signing of Arsenal’s Matt Turner, leaving the Englishman’s place at Forest a question mark.

Andre Onana was also sought to replace David de Gea between the sticks after his 12-year-stint in Manchester, so the Carrington graduate knows that a No.1 role is not possible at his current club heading into the forthcoming season.

Romano on Henderson

Still, Romano is expecting Henderson to leave United before the window closes. He told CaughtOffside in his exclusive Daily Briefing: “It is true, Nottingham Forest will only sign one goalkeeper at the moment; the plan is for Matt Turner to join from Arsenal but they could consider Henderson later in the window.

“So for Henderson, there could be something to follow in the final weeks of the summer window, there’s still no agreement with Manchester United but conversations will continue. Personally, I still think Henderson will leave Old Trafford this summer.”
