Erik ten Hag hails Manchester United youngster in programme notes

Mainoo Casemiro

Erik ten Hag penned his first programme notes of the season today and he took a moment to praise young Kobbie Mainoo after his impressive performances on pre-season.

The technically gifted academy graduate is a holding midfielder, who can be utilised in other roles, with a calmness and poise in possession which belies his years.

Unfortunately for Mainoo, an injury against Real Madrid ended his pre-season preparations prematurely.

Ten Hag wrote (via ManUtd.com): “Pre-season has also been a time for our academy talents to show their ability. I should reserve special mention for Kobbie Mainoo, who suffered an injury against Real Madrid but had already shown his potential among the senior squad. We all wish him a speedy recovery and hope to have him back in contention soon.”

The Dutchman is experienced enough to know that, at this stage of any prospect’s career, the aim of the game is to keep a lid on the expectation. That will be difficult with the 18-year-old, but he has some fine players to learn from at United, including Casemiro.

Mainoo will get more chances under Ten Hag, but I think he would have been in the frame to get minutes at the beginning of the season if it wasn’t for the injury.

Hopefully Mainoo can return to training soon.
