Former Manchester United midfielder must wait for Reading debut after transfer embargo

Charlie Savage completed a permanent move to Reading last week, ending his 15-year association with Manchester United.

The 20-year-old joined the League One side on a four-year deal. There was a sell-on clause included in the transfer which will allow United to match any bids that arrive for him in the future.

However, a week on from joining Reading, there has been an unfortunate plot twist for Savage – son of Robbie Savage, who is no stranger to United’s academy.

Savage has been left in limbo by Reading’s new transfer embargo, as per The Mirror. They were only cleared to bring in new players after a separate embargo was lifted last month.

The report states that Reading manager Rubén Sellés has been left ‘furious’ over this as he prepares for the season.

As a result, the EFL are refusing to register both Savage and Lewis Wing until an unpaid tax bill has been settled with HMRC.

That means Savage, who left United last week with two years left on his contract, will be unavailable for their League One opener against Peterborough.

Speaking on BBC’s 606 phone-in, Savage’s father admitted he is worried about the youngster’s situation after making a brave decision to leave United: “I’m very worried about the mental well-being of a young boy who took a brave decision, the biggest gamble of his life, to leave Manchester United – and now he’s not able to play.

“After signing for Reading, he was allowed to train and play in friendlies, but now he can’t. How has that happened?”

Hopefully this gets resolved and Savage can get back to enjoying his football.
